When we purchased our new fireplace the store never said anything about having to place the mantle 26" above the fireplace. That would have placed it about ceiling level. This item allowed us to place it much lower.

Does the job
December 16, 2011
My mantel is narrow at the bottom and slopes up so I had to reinforce the shield with two pieces of aluminum angle and drill new holes for the front. It fits perfect now and protects the mantel.
Pros:
simple and economical
Cons:
a little flimsy in the middle and not that attractive
