I have questions about all direct vent gas log fireplace inserts: I assume they all come with a glass front so as not to lose heat from the house up the flue. Is the glass permanent or is it like doors that can open to enjoy seeing the fire without glass in front of it? How does it heat a room compared to a ventless of comparable size?

Can you accomplish the same thing using a glass door with a vented gas log set rather than a fireplace insert?

Answer:
Direct vent appliances by design require a permanent glass front. This is due to how the units "breathe". Direct vent appliances operate on a dedicated dual venting system. These units draw their combustion air from outside the home through one vent pipe and exhaust combustion gases back to the outside through the other vent. Per this design, it is not possible to remove the glass front from a direct vent appliance. These units are very efficient and work well to radiate heat through their glass front to heat your living space.

A properly operating direct vent appliance can generate a comparable amount of heat to that of a vent free appliance. It can do so without adding carbon dioxide or excess humidity to a room. Further, many states disallow the installation of vent free appliances. No such prohibition is listed for direct vent units.

As a rule, vented gas logs should not be operated with the glass doors of a fireplace closed. These units need communication with the room to operate properly. Closing the glass doors can result in an inefficient, unclean burn.
