I am considering replacing our wood stove in the basement with a gas fireplace (propane). Right now the stove is vented thru a bock basement wall via a ceramic thimble to a block chimney. Can I use this thimble and chimney as is? The other option would be to vent it with specific pipe between the basement floor joist to the outside without having to run it up the outside wall.

Answer:Some direct vent fireplaces can be adapted to vent up and existing masonry chimney, using an adapter kit and a flexible liner, but this will depend on the size of the thimble and total length of the chimney. Your other option to use the factory specific pipe could also be done. What is the size of the thimble and how far would the fireplace be from it? Also, what is the total height of the chimney?
