Good Product, Can Wear Out After Heavy Use
May 2, 2014
So far this tent has lived up to expectations, and it improves on the design of older models. When it is put under hard use (a couple months of heavy use) some of the parts do start to fail. We have had problems with some of the zippers, and the waterproof coating seems to be wearing off now. The tent is a good buy overall.

I decided to purchase a Timberline Outfitter after my old one needed replacing (have always chosen the Timberline models), and I started to question the purchase as soon as I noticed the SQ. I believe this tent was poorly designed without real world scenarios in mind. I have found that the expander bar just allows the fly to catch more snow than normal, and the seams will start leaking after a while. I don't think that the buckles used on the tent will last very long, and think that the tent just feels like the designers were trying to make an A-Frame as close to a dome tent as possible.

Great Buy, Setup Gets Easier
April 17, 2013
Overall, I think this tent is built with superb quality, and I would definitely recommend it to others. That being said, the stakes that come with the tent definitely need to be improved. I'm not sure why they made such a great tent, then included such horrible stakes. I saw that a few people were complaining about it being difficult to get the tent expander into the pockets that it is suppose to fit in. I would recommend getting something thin and metal to help push the bar farther into the pockets. The material will eventually stretch, but it will take a few uses to get a comfortable fit. Unless you have some small people I would only recommend getting two people in the tent at a time (three maximum). I will definitely be expecting to get some great use out of this tent for a good while, and I would definitely get it again.

Still Excellent
November 20, 2012
In my scout troop we make sure that our SQ 4's get plenty of use. This new Timberline model is great and is what keeps us coming back to the model line after more than 25 years. Would definitely recommend to others.

Great A-Frame, Rugged and Comfy
February 23, 2012
When I first used this tent I noticed a few things. One is that it is extremely heavy duty. I did not have to worry about anything ripping through the bottom of the tent, and no rain got in the tent at all. Unfortunately, since the tent is so rugged it can get kind of heavy. I would only recommend getting this for trekking, although backpacking would be feasible if you don't care much about weight. The extra space the A-frame of the tent gives is definitely great (no more crouching to get in) and it allows for little extras like clothes line hangers and bigger ventilation windows (kept the tent nice and cool). Since it is an A-frame it doesn't handle constant heavy wind as well as others, so if you are expecting to go camping in gales, don't get this. Overall I would recommend if you need a rugged tent that can handle all sorts of weather, definitely get this one.

Timberline Buyer, Will Keep Coming Back
October 11, 2011
I have already purchased many of the Timberline series in the past, and this new model improves on every aspect of an already great design. The tent is roomy and keeps everything dry, and I have had no problems whatsoever with wind. As a Yellowstone outfitter, I plan to use the new SQ model timberline to faze out all my previous Timberline models.

Comfortable, Great Tent So Far
August 10, 2011
I don't agree with the others saying the cross piece was hard to put in, setup for me was easy overall. I can't comment on how it handles water (I have only gone camping in the desert so far), but it handled wind very well. Material seems thinner than some of the other tents in the Timberline series, but haven't had any problems (other than being pretty wrinkly when first taken out). I would recommend this tent to others, comfortable and sturdy.

Great Tent, Fly Design Needs to Be Improved
May 11, 2011
The tent seems to do everything promised, except for the spreader bar. I don't know whether the bar is longer than it should be or whether the tent fly is supposed to stretch to fit over it, but it seems like I am going to tear the material if I try to make it stretch that far. Once they get this problem fixed (or better explain how to install it), there won't be any problem with the tent.

Not All-Weather, Could Use Improvement
April 1, 2011
I am a scoutmaster and was looking for a good tent for all seasons. I have to say that the new design for the SQ models is unsatisfactory. Setup can be an issue, and windows need to be zippered. The design of the fly also needs to be improved, and some spare parts should be included. It is comfortable and spacious, but I would only recommend for camping in mild conditions.

Seems Lightweight, But Easy to Handle
July 14, 2010
I like the rugged feeling of the tent, and all the support poles look very strong. It took me barely any time at all to get it put together and staked down, so setup is definitely easy. Each type of piece for the tent has its own bag so cleanup is easy, and the bags they give you with the tent are large enough to hold everything with room to spare. I just got this tent, but it should probably do well when I use it soon. The material does feel kind of lightweight, but I don't know whether that will be a problem yet.

Like the Tent, Spreader Bar is a Pain
May 14, 2010
The tent has worked great overall. There is plenty of room inside, and it feels very rugged. The only problem I have is with the setup. The bar to spread the tent is very frustrating to install (too many pockets for it to fit through) and really holds up the setup while trying to get it in correctly. If they improve that, it would be perfect. I would recommend this tent to others (but fix the bar!).

Flimsy, Disappointed
January 12, 2009
I would definitely say that I am disappointed with the new Outfitter 4. I have purchased many of the Timberline Outfitter series and this model was not designed well. The materials for the tent seem overall cheaper and flimsy (especially a set of plastic clips that are used to attach the rain fly), and they switched from a nicer elastic rope to string for the rain fly tie-down. It is pretty easy to bend the spreader bar that comes with the tent too. Overall the tent feels weaker.
