1 Question & 1 Answer

We have a brick fireplace with a brick hearth and I would like to eliminate the brick hearth. I would like to use tile for the fireplace surround and lower the firebox to ground level (lower the firebox). Is this possible and how difficult would this be?
1 Answer
Much of the difficulty would depend on how the brick fireplace is constructed. It will likely not be any trouble to remove the hearth, but you will need to determine what is beneath the current firebox floor and if there is support beneath the firebox that is integral to the rest of the chimney. My suggestion would be to have a qualified mason come out to inspect the fireplace and give input on how the chimney is built and realistic cost to modify it.
