Bird and Squirrel Screen?
July 12, 2014
This item, sold as a bird and squirrel screen, is actually an HYC Spark Arrestor Screen. Conspicuously printed on the shipping boxes, but never mentioned on the website, is a dire warning about placement on a chimney used to vent gas-fired appliances. The warning refers to additional information inside which reads: "If you are using gas for house heating, EXTREME CAUTION (emphasis theirs, not mine) should be taken during the firing season when temperatures fall below zero fahrenheit. Visually check the screened cover daily for possible frost, snow or freezing rain build-up... CARBON MONOXIDE BUILD-UP IN THE HOUSE, DUE TO A BLOCKED CHIMNEY, CAN CAUSE DROWSINESS, HEADACHE AND/OR NAUSEA in its early stages, warning of its presence, BUT COULD PROVE FATAL IF PROPER CHIMNEY VENTING IS NOT ESTABLISHED AND MAINTAINED during periods of below zero temperatures." I find it curious that this warning is not given in the web listing. Other than that, the product looks exactly as advertised and fit my flues perfectly. As we live in the northeast and do vent gas-fired appliances, time will tell if these so-called bird and squirrel guards are going to cause more problems than they solve.
