Burning logs directly on the floor of your firebox prevents ventilation from the bottom of the fire. Building your fire on a cast-iron grate is a good choice because cast-iron retains heat longer than many other materials, keeping your fire burning better. Cast-iron also is more durable and stronger than some other materials. This fireplace grate measures 36 inches across the front and 32 inches across the rear. It is 16 inches deep.
