Stain Lighter Than Expected
I ordered the prestained fireplace surround. When it arrived, the color was lighter than I had expected. It is quite beautiful though, so I'm not sure whether I will have it restained or simply change the color of the room. It was simple to put together, and I'm very glad that I bought it.

Beautiful and Easy Installation
I was pleased how quickly the mantel arrived and how beautifully stained it was. Installation was simple enough for an amateur like me to do. Enjoying it very much.

Prefinished Is Beautiful
We purchased the fruitwood prefinished mantel. The staining was well done, and I would definitely recommend going with the prefinished if you plan to stain it anyway. The color was somewhere between a cherry and a mahogany finish -- very nice. It was pretty simple to put together, but I do wish they had either included extra washers or made the bolts about 1/4 inch shorter. Other than that, the mantel is wonderful.

Beautiful Mantel
Beautiful mantel, nice wood work. Expected to do some finishing with fine sand paper so that was not an issue. One issue was the fact that the base had a corner that had broken off. I didn't find that missing bit (about 1.5 cm square, diagonally chipped corner) in the packaging materials so I would guess that it was shipped in that form. Unfortunate final quality control practices. Thankfully, I cut and replaced the wood and with a little stain, you cant even see it.
ProsNice wood work.
ConsPoor quality control

Unsure About Stain
This mantel has made us extremely happy. I don't think the wood would stain very well, but we plan to apply white paint as is already on the molding nearby. It is more attractive than I thought that it would be.

Use This for Your Fireplace
If you are thinking of getting work done on your fireplace, I would urge you to consider buying this to use. The work to get it done professionally can cost upwards of ten grand, and don't expect it to be finished in a timely manner (ours took six months). Once we tried this mantel on our second fireplace, we were just as pleased as the first.

Focal Point
Great addition to my Great Room, Its now the focal point of the whole house, I used a marble hearth and side fill with a built in 50in Samsung TV above the mantel, added a grand cornice and some book cases on each side( (not completed yet) I used a 32in Electric Fireplace insert with remote control (also from this store) and its looking "Awesome Baby". I will follow up with pictures when it is complete...
ProsIt looks like a wooden antique fireplace should look, has a nice patina and wonderful lines. If you want something special definitely purchase this fireplace mantel.
ConsNothing to dislike,

Nicer Than Anticipated
The mantel was delivered in good shape, and I had no difficulty with assembly. It is actually nicer than I thought it would be. It does need to be painted though, because it does not take stain evenly.

Holds Up Well
I assembled the mantel without difficulty and am pleased with the result. Over time, a few scratches have appeared on the legs, and the stain has faded a bit. Besides these things, it is holding up well.

Dressed Up Our Fireplace
The actual mantel looks remarkably like its picture on the website. We just have a small, mass-manufactured fireplace, but the addition of this mantel made it the centerpiece of our family room.

Tricky to Stain
My recommendation is to get some experienced help with the staining process. The stain did not cover smoothly and tended to streak in places. I had to apply several coats, and it ended up several shades darker than I intended.

Too Beautiful to Paint
I liked this mantel when I saw it online, but it is even better in person. We had planned to paint it, but once we saw it, we decided that we couldn't conceal even a little of the beautiful hand woodwork. We are now going to stain it to display all its natural beauty. The house where it will be placed survived Hurricane Katrina, so I wanted a mantel that would be communicate both sturdiness and beauty. This mantel fits perfectly.

This mantel is absolutely beautiful. We stained it with a rich mahogany stain and used tung oil finish. It looks like it came from a Victorian Parlor of old. It was not difficult to put together at all., came complete with everything needed to install. Our only complaint is that we don't have additional fireplaces to use more on.
